Modern white kitchens have not left centre stage just yet, according to the judges of the Caesarstone Kitchen of the Year competition.

Bielle Bellingham, editor of Elle Decoration; celebrity chef, Reuben Riffel; creative director of the Expresso Morning Show, Bradley van den Berg; Mor Krisher, head of product design for Caesarstone International; and former Caesarstone Kitchen of the Year winner, Beth Haynes were the judges behind the selection of the eight finalists in the Caesarstone Kitchen of the Year competition.

This week The Home Channel features the competition's third kitchen design finalist - a predominantly white, high gloss kitchen design with contrasting, textured flooring and a yellow backsplash. This modern kitchen design was commissioned by homeowner Mampho Majola from Johannesburg, and designed by Shiku Kiarri of Sterlings.

While many designers and homeowners are embracing matte textures and darker shades in response to international kitchen design trends, many South African homeowners are still entranced by predominantly white, high gloss kitchens. "It's always refreshing to see an almost-white kitchen. What I love about this kitchen is that it's clean and obviously very high maintenance, but there are elements of it where you can see that the craftsmanship is excellent," says competition judge, Bradley van den Berg.

This modern kitchen design features a bright yellow, glass splashback and Caesarstone White Shimmer countertops, complemented by white, handleless cabinetry. Shiku incorporated various design elements to add visual interest to the space. Floating cabinets, LED foot-level lighting and display space on top of the upper cabinets are just some of the innovations incorporated into this kitchen.

"White countertops always help to create a light, bright finish in the kitchen space," says Trevor King, marketing director of Caesarstone South Africa. "South Africans particularly love Caesarstone countertops because not only are they beautiful, but they are so durable as well, and come with a fantastic warranty."

The winning kitchen designer and homeowner will win the Caesarstone Kitchen of the Year title, R50,000 each, and a luxurious hamper from KitchenAid. The awards ceremony takes place in Cape Town at Tokara Restaurant in Stellenbosch, where the winner will be announced.
