Caesarstone to Announce Student Designer of the Year

Caesarstone is preparing to announce the Caesarstone Student Designer of the Year via their annual competition geared at local architecture and interior design students.

Caesarstone is preparing to announce the Caesarstone Student Designer of the Year via their annual competition geared at local architecture and interior design students. A well established event in the Caesarstone calendar now in its 7th year, the competition draws on the talents of top South African tertiary institutions including the University of Cape Town, the University of Johannesburg, BHC School of Design, Potchefstroom Academy, Design Time and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, to name but a few.

Students are supplied with a brief conceptualised by one of the members of the judging panel – a group of five leading design professionals. They have close to a year to work on a design concept for submission to the competition. The Caesarstone Student Designer competition is unique in that it’s run in partnership with the institutions, and the exciting first prize is awarded to both the student and their lecturer, in recognition of the mentoring and grooming that it takes to nurture each design to its full potential.

This year’s brief was conceptualized by architect, Greg Wright, who has directed students’ attention to the cars of the future. Students must design a recharge station for the electric cars of 2020 – these stations must provide a space to charge vehicles, but they must also be a place where their drivers can recharge too. Each design department is only allowed to submit their top 5 designs, which helps to create a high standard of design.

Judging of the event takes place on 9 September and will be adjudicated by Jonathan Anstey of Jonathan Anstey Architects, Greg Wright of Greg Wright Architects, Lisa Younger of Activate Architects, Dorothy van’t Riet of DVR Interiors and new judge to the panel, Stefan Antoni of SAOTA. The 9 finalists and their lecturers will be flown down to Cape Town on 18 September to enjoy the awards ceremony and a night of celebration.

The first prize is a trip to an international design fair for both student and lecturer, worth R80,000; second prize is R10,000 cash, while third prize is R5,000 cash.

Caesarstone is proud to support up-and-coming, South African design talent.
