The highly anticipated Eurocucina 2014 – widely considered to be the foremost kitchen design show in the world – definitely did not disappoint. With more visitors than ever before, kitchen companies and product developers were more than pleased with the increased turnout of local Italian and foreign visitors to their stands. Held in Milan every two years, the fair takes place during the Salone del Mobile design week at the Rho fairgrounds, which can accommodate over 350,000 visitors at a time. The kitchen fair alone would require more than 5 Decorex spaces in order to accommodate all the kitchen exhibition stands!

Although encompassing a fair representation of traditional Italian kitchens, the majority of designers challenged the trends of the past with fresh takes on layout, lighting, colour and texture, offering consumers and homeowners striking sources of inspiration and brand new innovations to bring into the kitchen this year. While 2012 showcased an ultra-modern kitchen experience that seemed to cater to a niche market, 2014’s showcase seemed to demonstrate a maturity and level-headedness, revealing a deeper sensitivity to consumer needs not seen to such an extent in years gone by.

Traditional house design from years gone by dictated that kitchens were contained within an enclosed space, usually with four walls and a back door. It was customary to line each wall with kitchen cabinets and for the central space to be occupied by a kitchen table and chairs, creating a boxed kitchen design. In modern times open plan living has become the norm, allowing living areas and the kitchen space to flow into one another within one, larger space. This relatively new way of living has encouraged the move towards linear kitchen design – a prominent kitchen design trend featured at Eurocucina 2014. Perfect for small and large spaces, linear kitchens feature the bulk of the cabinetry built up against one wall, often presenting a kitchen island cabinet parallel to the main cabinets. This linear design creates clean lines and a sense of simplicity and works for both a modern or traditional look.
