Caesarstone annual Student Design Awards Winner Announced!

Caesarstone, the market-leading international producer of fine quartz surfaces, announced the winner of
its annual Student Design competition on Thursday 1st September 2011 at The Venue in Melrose Arch,
Johannesburg.

The concept of the brief for this year’s competition was ‘Real & Simple’, which was conceptualized by
Janina Masojada of designworkshop : sa in conjunction with Caesarstone.  The brief had to reflect the
perfect harmony between sustainability and style, and did not dictate maximum or minimal usage of the
Caesarstone product, instead asking students to create spatial and visual solutions by breaking
preconceptions.

The final set of entries showcased in Caesarstone’s 4th annual Student Design Awards unearthed the
dynamic innovations of South Africa’s future design landscape.  Students excelled in honing their
acquired design skills to create a space for every aspect of daily life.

The Caesarstone Student Designer of 2011 announced was Wouter Basson, a student from Tshwane University
of Technology’s Department of Interior Design, and the winning lecturer was Rene Kotze. They will both be
making their way to Israel, original home of Caesarstone. The prize, handsomely valued at R50 000.00,
includes airfare, accommodation and spending money.  In addition, iRender awarded the winning student
with software to the value of R20 000.00.

A merit award of R5000.00 was awarded to the runner up, Tarquin Van Der Westhuizen from BHC School of
Design’s Department of Interior Design, and his lecturer Marga Nagel.

A ‘special mention’ award was given to Eloise Van Dyk from Tshwane University of Technology’s Department
of Architecture, and her lecturer Marinda Bolt. Eloise received a cheque to the value of R3 000.00.
“The emerging design talent is an inspiration for the industry and this year the entries set a new
benchmark. The thought processes and respective applications stretch beyond the expected work of tertiary
design students.” commented Trevor King, Marketing Director of Caesarstone.
